- I put helium in my BMX bike tire as an experiment for weight reduction. And guess what? IT WORKED!
My BMX bike got lighter. It’s not flying like a helium balloon, but deffinitely worked.

Helium gas an much smaller size atomically and doesn't complex with itself because it's so chemically inert essentially this means that helium escapes through gas bladders much more quickly than say nitrogen or O2
This is pretty much why helium escapes from balloons over the manner of but a couple days
When you fill your tires with air your filling them higher molecular weighted compounds such as CO2, O2 , a very negligible amount xenon and neon gas
Which is why air tires stay filled up so well when you fill up your tires with N
N has a very large molecule compared to Oxygen and is why people suggest you should fill up with it
We use N because it's far more common but we could use xenon if it weren't so rare

When I was biking in middle/high school bikes probably drop down an average of 5 pounds all together. Every 3 months Odyssey, Profile, S&M were making good strides to make bikes lighter and still strong. I was never really all that good but I likes riding bike and it kept me in decent shape.

It gets heavier the more empty it gets because when all the helium is gone, air will get inside. Air is 6x denser than helium so it will be heavier than it was before fully filled.

Helium doesn't breakdown does it? correct me if i'm wrong but the reason balloons sink after a day is because latex is porous and the helium slowly leaks out of the minuscule 'holes'

Hydrogen is harder to get, but it's buoyancy (weight reduction) effect is greater than that of Helium. I'd love to see you attempt that.

I think that feeling of weight wont really change in a light bmx but in a heavy one it should really make a difference
Rotational mass makes a pretty big difference in the overall feeling of a bike's weight, it should make a pretty noticeable difference on any bike. It might not be as noticeable in a more street-oriented style of riding, though.
@@rolyat the atmosphere inside the tire doesn't follow the same rotational dynamics and the majority of the weight loss is from buoyancy. In addition if i recall, helium is very hard to seal properly

wouldn't it make it heavier because it takes more of the helium to fill the tire, so despite it being lighter per molecule it will be heavier in total because it takes more of it?

Your tire also always want to float in the air now too. Giving you a little extra lift in the air as an added bonus on top of the weight savings
How would it save you weight since air weighs almost nothing. Helium is lighter than air giving you a slight air boost but there is no weight saving.

Helium is heavier because it is smaller than regulsr air so it takes more to fill

Helium is less dense than air so you need more of it. It would be better if you filled it with a heavier gas that took less to fill the tyres Ryan needle made a video on it

You still had the atmospheric gases at 1 bar in your tires before you pumped the helium. You should suck all the air before pumping the helium.
